What to do
Even minor accidents can be inconvenient and distressing. At the scene of an accident it is important to capture as much as possible as this can help determine responsibility and speed up the claims process for both you and the third party.
To assist you in the unfortunate event, we have a list of questions you should ask:
- Names, addresses and telephone numbers of all persons who were in or who witnessed the incident
- Make, model and registration number of all vehicles involved. Try also to note the extent of damage and whether the vehicles are still driveable
- Note the date, time and location of the incident
- Details of what happened including any witnesses, or third parties, version of events but don't become involved in conversations about who was to blame and never admit liability
- Note if any person involved was physically injured or is complaining of pain and discomfort
- A diagram of the accident scene showing the road layout, position of the vehicles, other relevant features and witness locaions can be helpful. Many mobile phones now incorporate cameras - try to take photos of the vehicle positions and damage providing it is safe to do so
